A thriving sports scene in Chelmsford includes the Chelmsford Rugby Football Club, which has been playing at its home ground for over a century. The club boasts over 300 members and fields five senior teams every week. In 1912, it moved to a purpose-built New Street Works, which included two 450-foot radio masts. As a result, Chelmsford became known as the birthplace of the radio.
The town is home to two Grade II*-listed country houses, Hylands House and the Hylands Estate. Hylands House was saved from dereliction in 1966 by Chelmsford City Council. Its interiors date back to the 1730s. A nearby stable block is home to a cafe, gift shop and artists’ studios. The country park also features five hundred acres of ancient woodland, Victorian formal gardens, and a children’s adventure playground based on a medieval fortress.
